The Process of Car Key Cutting

Car key cutting is the process of creating a duplicate or replacement key for a car. Here’s the process:

Identify the Type of Key

Traditional Mechanical Keys: These are the standard, non-electronic keys that are cut using a pattern based on the original key’s shape.

Transponder Keys: These contain a chip inside the key that communicates with the car’s ignition system to start the engine.

Smart Keys: Also called proximity keys, these keys don’t need to be inserted into the ignition. They use a wireless signal to communicate with the car.

Obtain the Original Key or Vehicle Information:

If you have the original key, it will be used as the template for cutting the duplicate.

If you don’t have the original key, you may need to provide the vehicle’s VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) or proof of ownership to create a new key.

Key Cutting:

For Mechanical Keys: The key blank (a new, uncut key) is placed into a key-cutting machine, which uses the original key as a template. The machine cuts the key to match the pattern of the original key’s notches.

For Transponder Keys: After the key is cut to match the original key’s pattern, it is programmed with the car’s security code. This programming allows the key to communicate with the car’s ignition system.

For Smart Keys: The key is programmed with the necessary codes to allow it to start the car and interact with the vehicle’s electronics.

Testing

Once the key is cut and programmed, it’s important to test it. We will check if the new key works for both starting the car and, for transponder or smart keys, unlocking the doors and starting the engine.

Programming (for Transponder or Smart Keys):

Some keys, like transponder or smart keys, require programming with the car’s immobilizer system. This can often require the car to be present.

The key is programmed using a diagnostic tool to sync with the vehicle’s onboard computer system.

Final Testing

After cutting and programming, the key is tested to ensure it works for both mechanical and electronic purposes, including starting the vehicle and locking/unlocking doors.

For certain high-security or modern vehicles, it may be necessary to go through a dealership because the programming and cutting require specialized equipment. For most older vehicles with traditional keys, we will be able to perform the key cutting and programming.
